Gender equality is a top priority issue for UNESCO and it is considered as one of the 17 Sustainable development goals by the United Nations. It starts in education but it goes beyond that; it goes into the world of work and society in general.
It can be seen as a problem; I rather look at it as an opportunity.
Women in still male-dominated industries may face unique challenges that can make it difficult for them to succeed. These challenges can include lack of representation and stereotypes that can limit their opportunities for growth and advancement. However, by developing power skills like communication, negotiation, and leadership, women and men can overcome these challenges a gender bias, contributing for the success of a company.
· Effective communication is essential in any industry, but in industries where women may still need to work harder to be heard and understood is even more important. Women who can communicate their ideas clearly and confidently are more likely to be taken seriously by their colleagues and superiors, and they are better able to build relationships and create networks that can help them advance their careers.
· Negotiation skills are also crucial. Women who can negotiate effectively are better able to advocate for themselves and their ideas, and they are more likely to achieve the recognition and compensation they deserve. Negotiation skills can also help women navigate difficult situations, such as workplace conflicts or salary negotiations.
· Leadership skills are another essential example. Women who can lead effectively are better able to inspire and motivate their colleagues, they are more likely to be respected and trusted by their superiors and may become role models for younger girls and boys. Effective leadership can also help women break through the glass ceiling and achieve higher levels of success and influence.
There are many success stories of women - Ursula Bruns from Xerox or Sheryl Sandberg from Facebook - who have broken through the barriers in the still male-dominated industries by developing their power skills.
Developing power skills is also essential for men; as the more empathy, leadership, communication and collaboration skills one develops the fastest it recognizes how gender inclusion can in fact contribute for a happier, productive and thriving corporation and society.
These skills can help women and men overcome the unique challenges they face linked to their personal and professional goals, contributing to a more balanced society.
